Grade Two Math "Home Connection" Activity

Posted: November 29, 2010

In Grade Two Math, students have been working on creating story problems using addition and subtraction (numbers 0 to 18).   Activity: Ask your child to create an addition story problem, and a subtraction story problem using items in your home. For example: "There are 3 jars on the counter and 2 jars on the shelf. How many jars are there altogether?"   Tip: Remind your child to use key words in their story problems. Key words help the reader to figure out which operation (addition or subtraction) they need to do. Some examples of key words for addition problems are "how many altogether?"and "how many in total?" Some examples of key words for subtraction problems are "how many are left?" and "what is the difference?"
