Notes

There have been two great Hackmatack author presentations on Facebook, by Newfoundland's Charis Cotter (by way of Toronto, while she keeps her Dad company), and Jan L. Coates, from beautiful Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

All the videos will be available for viewing on our Facebook page, so anyone interested can come by and watch.

We have another session tomorrow, which hadn't been finalized when I sent the previous email:

Anne Laurel Carter – Thursday, May 14, 1:00pm ADT on the Hackmatack Facebook page
Nominated for English nonfiction: My River: Cleaning up the LaHave River, written with young environmental activist Stella Bowles.

See the Hackmatack Facebook Page for more upcoming dates.

I hope you enjoyed poetry week!  Here are a couple of poems that I received:

Boom! Go the pins

On the lanes

Wobbling pins fall

Loud cheering people

I celebrate the strike

Next bowler's turn

Going on the lane

By Tony

MY CAT LOOKS LIKE A BAT

A BIG FAT BLACK BAT.

WHEN MY CAT COMES FROM HIS LITTER

HE`S SUCH A CRITTER.

SOME TIMES HE PLAYS

ON THE SUNNY DAYS.

BEFORE MY CAT HAS A

NAP HE DOES SOME LAPS.

BY TAELYN

Here is a limerick that I wrote this week:

There once was a teacher named Carroll

She’s trying to keep her hands sterile

We can’t go OUT?

It’s making me shout

Is the whole world really in peril?

Hello Grade 4/5 students and parents,

The District/Province is looking to ensure that all students are able to access the resources that I am providing to complete "Home Learning Opportunties." As a result, I have been asked to survey each family. If the answer is "no" to either of the following questions, please email me at cheryl.carroll@nbed.nb.ca. Thanks so much!

1) Does your child have access to "high speed internet?"

2) Does your child have access to a device (tablet, computer, laptop, etc.)  to complete the learning opportunity suggestions?

Dreambox Update:

Instead of minutes logged on to Dreambox each day, I would like students to focus on the number of activities that they have completed.  Each student is asked to complete 2 activities each day (please ensure that when an activity is started that you finish the activity).  Doing activities on a daily basis is better than only logging on once a week and completing 10 activities (which would take well over an hour).  The average time to complete 2 activities should be between 14-20 min.

We have almost completed our first month of Grade Five already!    There is a focus this month on school routines and things are progressing well with the Intensive French Program.  I hope to put some samples of student work on this page from time to time.   Homework: I plan to have a consistent routine for homework each week.  Math - There will be a homework sheet each week and students are asked to study their multiplication facts each night. Language Arts - The students will read in English each night (15 - 20 min) and they have a written reading response each week.  Some weeks they will complete a reading comprehension activity in the place of the reading response.  I feel it is important to continue with some English writing during the Intensive French block.
