April 11th-13th, 2012 The New Friends will not have Homework this week, due to the short school week. Please have your child read to you at home each day. I will send your child's Homework Duotang home, so that you can record their reading.  Friday, April 13th is Pizza Day. $1.50 per slice.  I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing long Easter weekend! March 19th - 22nd 2012   Tuesday, March 20th - Report Cards go home.   Wednesday, March 21st - Last skating day for this school year. We will be going skating at approximately 10:15. Don't forget to bring your skates and helmet!   *Please Note - There will be no school for students on Friday, March 24th, due to Parent-Teacher Interviews in the morning, and scheduled teacher meetings in the afternoon.   Have a great week!

A big congratulations goes out to the K-2 students, who won the latest Mango Challenge! Mrs. Darlene MacDonald (of Mango) was in today to give the students a certificate and a healthy snack.   Keep eating healthy snacks, boys and girls!

This week in Literacy, we will meet Willie Weasel, and learn about the letter "W". You can brainstorm words that begin with the letter "W" at home with your child. You can take this activity a step further by brainstorming words that have the letter "W" in them, like "cow", "two" and "chew". Have fun!   In Math, we will continue to work on Unit Four: "Numbers to 10". We will practice counting from 1 to 10 forward and backward this week.

February 27th-March 2nd, 2012   We have a very busy and fun week ahead of us!   Monday, February 27th is "Crazy Hat or Crazy Hair Day". Wear your favourite silly hat or do your hair in a crazy style!   Tuesday, February 28th is "Dress as Your Favourite Book Character Day". If you have a copy of the book that your character is based upon, bring it to school with you.   Wednesday, February 29th is "Pink Shirt Day". We will wear pink shirts on this day to show that we are against bullying.         *Please Note - will also be going skating today at approximately 10:15 a.m. Remember to bring your skates and helmet!   Thursday, March 1st is "Pajama Day". Wear your favourite pair of pajamas to school today.   Friday, March 2nd is "French Culture Day". We will be taste-testing some Acadian foods in the afternoon, courtesy of Mrs. Carroll and her Mother. The students will also be performing French songs and skits for the students and staff.

Literacy - This week, the Kindergarten students will meet "Vincent Vampire Bat", and learn about the letter "V".   Math - We will continue to learn about the number 10. This week, we will focus on the "partners" for the number 10: 1 & 9, 2 & 8, 3 & 7, 4 & 6, 5 & 5.   *Please note - There will be no school for students on Friday, February 24th, due to scheduled teacher meetings.

The Kindergarten students will meet "Umber Umbrella Bird" this week. You can practice making the short u sound with your child at home.   In Math, we will be learning about the number 10 this week. You can practice counting from 1 to 10 with your child at home. Make it fun by counting the cans as you put them in the cupboard, or counting your child's toys together.

February 13th-17th, 2012:                   Tuesday, February 14th is Valentine's Day! We will have a class Valentine's Day celebration in the afternoon. We also have our "Heritage Breakfast" in the morning at the Napan Hall.   Wednesday, February 15th - We will be going skating at approximately 10:15 am. Remember to bring your skates and helmet!   Friday, February 17th is the 100th Day of School! We will be celebrating all day long, with lots of activities based on the number 100! It is also Pizza Day.

Homework - There will be no homework this week. However, students should continue to do their daily reading at home.   Skating - We will be going skating on Wednesday, January 11th at 10:15 am. Remember to bring your skates and helmet!
This week in Math, we began working of the "Data Analysis" unit, in which the students will collect, display and analyse data to solve problems. Please note that this will be the final "Home Connection Activity" of the school year.   Activity: Direct your child to ask a question of the family such as: "Do you like orange juice?" Your child can then record the answers of up to ten family members or friends using tallies or checkmarks. Have fun!

The Grade Two students began the "Geometry" unit in Math this week. The students will learn to sort, compare, and describe 2-D (two-dimensional) shapes (e.g., triangles, squares, rectangles, circles), and 3-D (three-dimensional) objects (e.g., cubes, spheres, cones, cylinders, pyramids).   Activity: With your child, look for examples in your home of some of the shapes he or she has learned about, such as circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares. Which do you find most often? Have fun!

The Grade Four students are pleased to announce that our "Cutest Pet Contest" was a huge success! $55 was raised in total for the SPCA, along with donations of pet food, toys and treats.
