June 1 – 5

Grade 4/5 students:

Great job on your ‘Home Learning’ students!  I am very proud of your efforts and thank you to those who have sent me their Opinion writing to my email (cheryl.carroll@nbed.nb.ca).  I enjoyed reading them and am giving students some feedback.  Here is your schedule for the week:

  1. MathLogin to Dreambox and complete a minimum of two activities each day (10 activities for the week).  Remember that the activities with a calendar icon are ones that I have assigned.

Last week, 8 out of 11 students completed all 10 activities.

  2. Writing JournalSpend 15-20 minutes each day writing a journal entry.

  3. Weekly Writing Task - Spend 15-20 minutes working on the assigned writing task so that you have a finished good copy by the end of the week (remember to spend some time revising and editing your work).  Email to cheryl.carroll@nbed.nb.ca

This week we are going to write a personal narrative (recount) where you retell an event that happened in your life.  View the following teaching videos on how to write a personal narrative.  The videos give you a general overview but I think they are intended for younger students.  Keep in mind that when the video refers to ‘pages’, you will be writing paragraphs.  In the example, the sections are a bit too short.  In grade 4 and 5 you should have paragraphs with an opening or topic sentence, two or three supporting details or examples, and a closing sentence. Each paragraph should be at least 5-7 sentences long for each ‘part’ of your personal narrative.

Here is a choice board to help you pick a topic (or you can choose one of your own):

I am including a graphic organizer for a personal narrative, a sample of how I used the graphic organizer, and my personal narrative of the time that I beat Evan at golf!  I hope that Evan and I  get a chance to play golf against each other this summer for another rematch.

I am attaching the District’s weekly STEAM newsletter for those who are interested in doing additional activities.

  • Reminder that students should spend 30 minutes each day reading and doing physical activity.

Keep up the great work!  Only one more week of Home Learning after this week.

Grade 4/5 students:

Good job on your ‘Home Learning’ students!  I am very proud of your efforts and thank you to those who have sent me their Reading Response writing to my email (cheryl.carroll@nbed.nb.ca).  I enjoyed reading them and gave students some feedback.  Here is your schedule for the week:

  1. MathLogin to Dreambox and complete a minimum of two activities each day (10 activities for the week).  Remember that the activities with a calendar icon are ones that I have assigned.

Last week, 6 out of 11 students completed all 8 activities.

This week we will give persuasive or opinion writing another try.  When writing your paragraphs for an opinion piece try to think Oreo (not my nasty dog!).  The topic sentence and closing sentence state your opinion and the middle sentences give reasons and examples.

View the following teaching videos on how to write an opinion piece.  The videos give you a general overview but I think are intended for younger students.  The paragraphs in the example are a bit too short.  In grade 4 and 5 you should have paragraphs with an opening or topic sentence, more than one detail and example, and a closing sentence. (your paragraphs should be 5-7 sentences long)

There have been two great Hackmatack author presentations on Facebook, by Newfoundland's Charis Cotter (by way of Toronto, while she keeps her Dad company), and Jan L. Coates, from beautiful Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

All the videos will be available for viewing on our Facebook page, so anyone interested can come by and watch.

We have another session tomorrow, which hadn't been finalized when I sent the previous email:

Nominated for English nonfiction: My River: Cleaning up the LaHave River, written with young environmental activist Stella Bowles.

Grade 4/5 students:

Great job on your ‘Home Learning’ students!  I am very proud of your efforts and thank you to those who have sent me their reading response to my email (cheryl.carroll@nbed.nb.ca).  I enjoyed reading them and gave students some feedback.  Here is your schedule for the week:

  1. MathLogin to Dreambox and complete a minimum of two activities each day (10 activities for the week).  Remember that the activities with a calendar icon are ones that I have assigned.

This week you will write an information piece.  For your information piece or report, you will include an introduction, a minimum of 3 body paragraphs (one paragraph for each subtopic that you choose), and a conclusion.

View the following four teaching videos on informational writing.  Please note that the video refers to writing a ‘book’, however you will be writing in an essay format and each ‘section’ will be in a paragraph.  Adding photos is optional but you may do that if interested:

  1. Informational Writing for Kids- Episode 3: Making a Plan  Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehzBzAo3h44&list=PLTCzXKdxBpDDcTXBNyvPmR1r_nOg-26sX&index=3

I have attached a blank graphic organizer as well as a sample information piece that I wrote (including my graphic organizer that I filled in ). I chose to write about climate change and found my research information on the site ScienceFlix (see link below).

    Topic ideas:

  • Choose an animal that you know a lot about (or like). Write an in informational essay about that animal.  https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/

  • Think about what you want to be when you grow up.  Write an informational essay about the career you would like.

  • Think of a hobby or sport that you enjoy.  Write an informational essay about the sport or activity.

  • Choose a topic related to Science and write an information essay about the topic http://scholastic.ca/education/free_digital_resources/ (click on Trueflix or ScienceFlix)

The above videos give a basic framework for informational writing.  However, I noticed that she started her sentences in the same way many times and started each sentence on a new line.  Remember, we have been focusing on writing good paragraphs.  Start each paragraph with a topic sentence, then write a minimum of 3 – 4 sentences that include details, facts or examples, and finish each paragraph with a closing sentence.  Please put the facts that you find into new sentences in your own words (no copying!).  I look forward to reading your informational essays (send it to cheryl.carroll@nbed.nb.ca ).

  1. MathLogin to Dreambox and complete a minimum of two activities each day (10 activities for the week).  Remember that the activities with a calendar icon are ones that I have assigned.

This week you will write two reading responses. Use the book (fiction/novel) that you are reading to complete the activities below.

Reading Response Choice Board: Using the book that you are reading, choose two of the options on the choice board to respond to.

Paragraph 2-setting

Paragraph 3 –the problem and how it was solved.

S-W-B-S (Somebody Wanted But So)

Somebody- Who is the story about?

Wanted- What did the character want?

But- but what happened?

So- So how did it end? What happened next?

Describe one of the characters in the story by giving examples of a character trait s/he exhibits.

Ex: brave, generous, thoughtful, determined, cunning.

Use examples from the story.

I Poems

Write a poem from the character’s point of view using some of the following sentence stems:

I am…                       I pretend…

I wonder…               I feel…

I hear…                     I worry…

I see…                       I cry…

I want…                    I dream…

Alternate Ending

Think of a different way the story could have ended. Write a paragraph that describes what could have happened and what the consequences would have been.
