April 27 – May 1

Grade 4/5 students:

Excellent job on your ‘Home Learning’ students!  I am very proud of your efforts and thank you to those who have sent me their autobiography to my email (cheryl.carroll@nbed.nb.ca).  I enjoyed reading them and gave students some feedback.  Here is your schedule for the week (Don't forget to also read each day, 30 min of physical activity and social/emotion learning):

  1. MathLogin to Dreambox and complete a minimum of two activities each day (10 activities for the week).  Remember that the activities with a calendar icon are ones that I have assigned.

I am happy to report that 9 out of 11 students completed all 10 activities last week and the class completed 175 lessons in total!

  2. Writing JournalSpend 15-20 minutes each day writing a journal entry.

  3. Weekly Writing Task - Spend 15-20 minutes working on the assigned writing task so that you have a finished good copy by the end of the week (remember to spend some time revising and editing your work).  Email to cheryl.carroll@nbed.nb.ca

This week you will write an opinion piece (persuasive writing). You can choose a topic from the choice board below or choose your own topic.  This writing piece should include 5 paragraphs (an introduction, 3 body paragraphs that explain or give details for your reasons for or against the opinion, and a conclusion).

This week, let’s focus on writing a great introduction and conclusion.  The feedback that I provide will mainly focus on how you did writing your introduction and conclusion.  Continue to make sure you have paragraphs that are easy to find and that start with a good topic sentence.

  • The introduction should introduce your topic and catch the reader’s attention.  State your opinion clearly and give the reader a ‘preview’ of your reasons for or against by saying the three reasons that support your opinion (without giving details).  You should finish the introduction by restating your opinion.

  • The conclusion sums up the things you have said in your piece of writing so remind the reader of your opinion.  Restate the reasons you gave in each of your body paragraphs (or write a sentence that summarizes each body paragraph). Write a concluding sentence that clearly states your opinion in another way.

In the attached document, I have included some opinion words and phrases, a graphic organizer, a sample of how I used the graphic organizer and a sample persuasive essay that I wrote.  Use these to help you and remember to pay particular attention to your introduction and conclusion.  I wrote about why I have the best mother.  You could do the same topic (different reasons and examples of course) and give it to your mom on Mother’s Day.

Here are some possible topics to choose from:

April 20 – 24

Grade 4/5 students:

Excellent job on your ‘Home Learning’ students!  I am very proud of your efforts and thank you to those who have sent me their friendly letter and/or poems to my email.  I enjoyed reading them.  Here is your schedule for the week:

  1. Math – It has been brought to my attention that the preferred browser for Dreambox is Google Chrome (using Chrome may reduce or eliminate the glitches or lagging)

Login to Dreambox and complete a minimum of two activities each day (total of 10 activities for the week).  Remember that the activities with a calendar icon are ones that I have assigned.  Last week, the total number of activities completed on Dreambox was 150!

  2. Writing JournalSpend 15-20 minutes each day writing a journal entry.

  3. Weekly Writing Task - Spend 15-20 minutes working on the assigned writing task so that you have a finished good copy by the end of the week (remember to spend some time revising and editing your work).  This week you will write an autobiography.  Click on the attached document to find an autobiography that I wrote as well as a graphic organizer to help you gather ideas.  Remember that acceptable writing in grades 4 and 5 must be in paragraphs.  I chose four topics about myself (facts, teaching career, family, interests) and so my autobiography has four paragraphs with details about these topics.  Each paragraph has a topic sentence and a closing sentence.

Let us focus on three things for you to self-evaluate.  As you revise, ask yourself these three questions:

  • Did I organize my writing into paragraphs?

  • Can I tell the topic of each paragraph after reading the first sentence?

  • Did I vary the lengths and beginnings of my sentences?

Also each day - remember to read for 30 minutes, and spend 30 minutes doing physical activity

I hope you enjoyed poetry week!  Here are a couple of poems that I received:

Boom! Go the pins

On the lanes

Wobbling pins fall

Loud cheering people

I celebrate the strike

Next bowler's turn

Going on the lane

By Tony

MY CAT LOOKS LIKE A BAT

A BIG FAT BLACK BAT.

WHEN MY CAT COMES FROM HIS LITTER

HE`S SUCH A CRITTER.

SOME TIMES HE PLAYS

ON THE SUNNY DAYS.

BEFORE MY CAT HAS A

NAP HE DOES SOME LAPS.

BY TAELYN

Here is a limerick that I wrote this week:

There once was a teacher named Carroll

She’s trying to keep her hands sterile

We can’t go OUT?

It’s making me shout

Is the whole world really in peril?

Hello Grade 4/5 students and parents,

The District/Province is looking to ensure that all students are able to access the resources that I am providing to complete "Home Learning Opportunties." As a result, I have been asked to survey each family. If the answer is "no" to either of the following questions, please email me at cheryl.carroll@nbed.nb.ca. Thanks so much!

1) Does your child have access to "high speed internet?"

2) Does your child have access to a device (tablet, computer, laptop, etc.)  to complete the learning opportunity suggestions?

Dreambox Update:

Instead of minutes logged on to Dreambox each day, I would like students to focus on the number of activities that they have completed.  Each student is asked to complete 2 activities each day (please ensure that when an activity is started that you finish the activity).  Doing activities on a daily basis is better than only logging on once a week and completing 10 activities (which would take well over an hour).  The average time to complete 2 activities should be between 14-20 min.

Hello Parents and Students.  Today begins our journey into Home Learning!  I hope to provide the students with purposeful learning opportunities but do not want these tasks to create hardships for the families.  These are suggestions so that the students can continue to have some practice in the areas of reading, writing, and math in particular.  Please feel free to contact me via email with any questions or concerns at cheryl.carroll@nbed.nb.ca

Grade 4/5 students:

We will follow a weekly routine where it is suggested that you spend 1 hour/day doing the following tasks:

  1. Math – Login to Dreambox and spend 20-30 min working on tasks and assignments (an activity is assigned by me if there is a calendar icon in the corner of the activity).  I have attached a letter in the documents tab with instructions to access Dreambox at home.  Please email me if you do not know your password or are having trouble finding the site.

The website specific to our school is: https://play.dreambox.com/login/knjs/6a9h

  2. Writing Journal Spend 15-20 minutes each day writing a journal entry.  Make sure that you date each entry!  There are some suggestions on the first page of your journal but these are just a way to spark your thinking.  In the years to come, this journal will be a primary source of information from this time in history.  This idea came from thedailycafe.com and this is a quote about using a journal: “During this challenging time in all of our lives, daily writing—by students and adults—can provide respite and a safe, creative, and emotional outlet. Through writing and/or illustrating stories, poems, journal entries, comics, graphic texts, or whatever form or genre the imagination conjures up, we can add meaning and documentation to our present and future lives.”

  3.  Weekly Writing Task Spend 15-20 minutes/day working on the assigned writing task so that you have a finished good copy by the end of the week (remember to spend some time revising and editing your work).  This week you will write a friendly letter (you can write to me or anyone else).  Click on the attached document to find a letter that I wrote to you as well as an outline that shows the format of a friendly letter.

Not included in the 1 hourIn addition to the above tasks, students are encouraged to

  • read for 30 minutes each day – You can read a book of your choice.  There are also many online options such as downloading ebooks from the public library.  I will not overwhelm you with suggestions (please contact me if you need help finding things to read) but can not resist to share this site from Scholastic.  You can read from the “TrueFlix” site (I had to use Chrome)  https://sdm-tfx.digital.scholastic.com/?authCtx=U.794217314 Each topic has a video, short book (that you can read or have it read to you), there are weblinks for more information on the topic, a project idea, and even a quiz (show what you know).

  • physical activity for 30 minutes -  see the documents tab for physical activity ideas for the month from Mr. Watters J

  • Social Emotional Learning – Don’t forget to look after your emotional well-being!  See the documents tab for suggested activities each day for the month of April (if interested).

Sorry for the length of this initial post!
